Bittersweet endings

If you are hopelessly romantic or you want to please your sweetheart with some corny staff I have the perfect option for you. If, however, you are not the sensitive kind, you must know Gone with the wind and 500 days of summer aren’t like the ordinary predictable love films.

The common patern between both films is the thematical content: the conflictive relationship that the main characters established, and the unexpected ending. Furthermore, both male characters, Tom Hansen from 500 days of summer and Rett Butler from Gone with the wind suffer their lovers’ rejection and deception. However, their personalities differ: Tom is a very shy and low profile guy, whereas Rett is known for being a womanizer who refuses to maintain a long relationship. Both female figures resemble each other in their beauty and stubbornness. Scarlet O’Hara, magnificently represented by Vivien Leigh, encounters the problem of deciding between the man with whom she’s obsessed (Ashley Wilkes) and the one who really loves her (Rett). Summer Finn, played delightfully and with the exact quantity of ambiguity by the amazing Zoey Deschanel (sister of the famous Emily Deschanel from TV serie Bones) finds it difficult to cope with Tom’s feelings as she doesn’t feel the same. She is unable to set the terms and limits of the relationship clearly.

Gone with the wind differs from 500 days of summer in its antiquity. It is almost a cult-classic film, remembered by anyone who has a reasonable Hollywood’s story knowledge. It is also said that it was the most faithful film to the book it was based on, written by Margaret Mitchell. Maybe the acting isn’t sober enough, but the dialogues are worth to remember as well as the soundtrack.

Whichever you chose, both endings will let you a slight bitter taste on your mouth and you’ll probably start questioning yourself about philosophical issues. However, if you are looking for an entertaining afternoon’s viewing, I recommend you 500 days of summer, that is shorter and unique in its genre.
